About this product

The Mountain Hardwear Phantom Windstopper Sleeping Bag is built for extreme-altitude expeditions, carrying a -40 degrees Fahrenheit temperature rating and an EN/ISO comfort rating of 13 degrees Fahrenheit. Its mummy shape uses a two-layer GORE-TEX Windstopper shell constructed from 30D nylon ripstop face fabric and a lighter 15D nylon ripstop lining, providing windproof protection while maintaining enough breathability to allow moisture to escape rather than accumulate inside. The 800-fill-power, RDS-certified goose down is arranged in vertical side baffles to preserve loft over time, and a draft collar along with insulated zipper tubes help seal in warmth. A left-hand, three-quarter-length No. 5 zipper allows fast entry and exit with minimal snagging. The Regular size accommodates users up to 6 feet tall and measures 89 inches in length, while the Long extends to 95 inches for users up to 6 feet 6 inches. Packed weight comes in at 907 grams, and the bag ships with both a compression sack and a mesh storage sack. Seams are sealed, and the bag carries a lifetime manufacturer warranty.

What people are saying

Reviewers consistently praise the Mountain Hardwear Phantom Windstopper -40F for its exceptional warmth-to-weight ratio, with 800 to 850-fill-power down delivering reliable protection in extreme alpine and expedition conditions. The GORE-TEX Windstopper shell earns repeated praise for keeping the bag dry and maintaining full loft in wind and light precipitation. The oversize draft collar, insulated hood, and anti-snag zipper are frequently highlighted as well-executed features. The most common criticism is the highly tapered, snug mummy cut, which some find restrictive, though others note the expedition version offers more room than expected. Reviewers also note that the Windstopper shell can limit breathability compared to standard ripstop versions, making it best suited for shelterless bivouacs rather than tent camping. The premium price point is a recurring concern.
