About this product

The MSR Elixir 4 is a freestanding 3-season backpacking tent designed to sleep four people across a 5.11 square metre floor area measuring 2.24 metres wide by 2.29 metres long, with an interior peak height of 1.22 metres. Its crossed-arch 7000-series aluminum pole configuration creates generous headroom, and colour-coded poles, clips, and webbing simplify setup. Two StayDry doors open into side-entry vestibules (0.75 square metres each) fitted with rain gutters that redirect water away from the entrance. The 75-denier polyester ripstop fly carries a 1500mm waterproof rating and a PFAS-free DWR finish, while the 75-denier polyester floor is rated to 3000mm. Canopy panels combine 40-denier polyester with solution-dyed 20-denier nylon mesh for ventilation, privacy, and stargazing. A built-in gear loft and interior pockets keep the space organized. Packed weight is 4.21 kg into a 56 by 19 cm stuff sack, with a minimum weight of 3.72 kg. A footprint and stakes are included.

What people are saying

Reviewers consistently praise the MSR Elixir 4 for its fast, color-coded pole setup, solid build quality, and versatility across car camping and occasional backpacking. The freestanding design, two vestibules, interior gear lofts, and factory-sealed seams earn repeated compliments, and long-term users report the tent holding up well over multiple seasons with proper care. The most common criticisms center on weight (around 9 lbs 3 oz), which makes it a tough solo carry on longer backpacking trips, and on interior space that some find tight for four full-grown adults with gear. Condensation buildup is a recurring complaint, particularly with a full occupancy of warm sleepers in cool or wet conditions. A smaller number of users have raised concerns about the rainfly coating degrading after a few years of use.
